Reading Routine:

Step 1: 

  • Take a “Sneak Peek” at the beginning of your book or story.  
  • Make a prediction. 

Step 2: 

  • Read the book and check your prediction.   
  • Was it correct? How do you know? 

Step 3:  

  • Do SOMETHING at the end.  
  • Go back and reread a part. 
  • Discuss the story. 
  • Draw a picture. 
  • Write about what you learned. 

Decoding Strategies:

Allow your child to try one or two strategies before you help with the word.  We want students to practice, but we don’t want them to become too frustrated.

  • Check if it is a snap/sight word. 

Comprehension:

Questions to ask BEFORE reading: 

  • What do you think this book will be about? 
  • What are you curious to learn from this book? 

  • What do you already know about this book/topic before reading? 

 

Questions to ask DURING reading: 

  • What do you think will happen next? 

  • What is the problem in the book? 

  • How are the characters attempting to solve the problem? 

 

Questions to ask AFTER reading: 

  • Tell me about a part you liked or disliked. 

  • How did the character change in the book? 

  • Did this book remind you of anything?
